FROM DATA TO CONVERSATION
An information gap activity gives two learners different pieces of information. Each learner needs facts that appear on their partner’s worksheet. To finish the task, they ask questions, listen to the answers, and write the missing details.
For example, Student A knows Maya’s city but needs her job. Student B knows the job but needs the city. The exchange has a clear purpose: “Where does Maya live?” and “What does Maya do?” Students use the language to find something out.
This maker keeps the first column visible on both sheets so students can identify the same person or item. Every other value appears on exactly one student version. The teacher answer key contains the complete table.
ADAPT IT TO YOUR LESSON
Use names, hometowns, jobs, or hobbies. Practice questions such as “Where does Leo live?” or “What does Amira do?” Two answer columns give both partners something to ask about each person.
Add train destinations, departure times, and ticket prices. Learners ask “What time does the train leave?” and “How much is a ticket?” Finish with a shared decision about which journey to take.
Enter people and activity times to practice the present simple. Students find out when each person gets up or goes to bed, then describe similarities and differences using the completed table.
Model one question before handing out the sheets. With beginners, write a useful question frame on the board and rehearse it together. For a harder task, remove the frame and ask learners to form their own questions.
Use fictional names and details rather than personal student information. Adjust the number of rows to the time available. A short table leaves room for a second step: compare answers, choose an option, or report something interesting about a partner.
Information gap tasks differ from a typical cloze exercise. A cloze task asks learners to supply missing words in a passage. This activity supplies the missing facts to a partner, creating a speaking and listening exchange.
